I have done a lot of research (over 10 years) to determine the best organic crib mattress for babies. Let’s take a look at facts vs. fiction when it comes to safety and toxicity of organic mattress mattresses.

If you are looking for an organic crib mattress, you probably already know that non-organic mattresses can be very toxic. This is because typical inexpensive crib mattresses contain polyurethane foam and are covered with vinyl (PVC) or some other toxic plastic for waterproofing. These materials are harmful, especially to small babies with undeveloped brains, lungs and immunity.

In addition, because polyurethane foam is highly flammable, manufacturers are required to add substances to make the mattresses flame-resistant. Most manufacturers use highly toxic chemical mattress delivery fire retardants to pass these fire laws. The chemicals used in the mattress materials and in the fire retardants create off-gassing that babies breathe in and absorb through their skin. No one should risk putting their baby to sleep on these mattresses. Yes, organic crib mattresses are more expensive, but it’s well worth the cost to protect your baby.

Keep in mind that simply because a mattress is organic does not mean that it is also non-toxic. This is very important to understand. Mattress manufacturers can call their mattresses organic simply because they use organic cotton as the inside filling. Many organic crib mattresses contain toxic plastic coverings and fire retardant materials; however they are still considered organic. The majority of the inexpensive organic crib mattresses (including those for bassinets or cradles) continue to be comprised of components that emit toxic gases and are harmful to your baby.

In addition, many mattress manufacturers are taking advantage of the “green” movement. There are currently no laws in place that prevent manufacturers from using terms such as green or eco-friendly. Mattresses touting names such as “Eco Foam” or “Bio Foam” and “Soybean Foam” are cropping up everywhere and appeal to eco-conscious moms. But did you know that what mattress manufacturers do is replace a small percentage (12-17%) of the toxic polyurethane foam with plant-based ingredients? You may be tempted by them as you shop for the best organic crib mattress but don’t be fooled by the slick claims. None of these small changes in manufacturing are enough to move the mattresses out of the toxic zone.
